Gerald Swanson founded Swanson Law Group in 2024. After practicing for 15 years in Big 4 public accounting and 14 years with a boutique state tax consulting firm, he decided to establish his own firm.
SLG provides a variety of state tax services including nexus determinations, tax compliance review, tax controversy, voluntary disclosures, sales/use tax accrual and compliance processes and other state tax related consulting and planning. While specializing in Washington excise and multistate taxes, we represent local, national and global companies in a variety of state and local tax matters. In particular, we represent some of the largest global companies before the Washington State Department of Revenue and various local jurisdictions in all stages of the administrative process, including appeals and executive hearings before the Director of the Washington State Department of Revenue as well as high-level personnel in other taxing jurisdictions. SLG also represents companies before local government agencies, including appearing before various city councils and hearing examiners.
SLG represents a variety of businesses in industries including financial services, technology, retailing, manufacturing and construction. We advise these businesses across a variety of issues and various stages of the business cycle. We work closely with many of our clients' internal tax departments. In this context, we may prepare, review and file returns, work with outside providers for state and local tax compliance and consulting, manage audits, and other day-to-day tax department activities as well as coordinate with company personnel for tax planning and strategic guidance.
SLG also represents numerous financial service businesses. In fact, we represent and have represented some of the largest banks on state of Washington and local tax matters. We also represent or have represented many other financial businesses including a number of local and national broker-dealers, registered investment advisors (RIAs), and insurance companies on various Washington excise and multistate tax matters.
Finally, we consult with a number of local and national accounting firms, serving as the state and local tax advisers to their clients. We work with a network of experienced state and local tax professionals located in various jurisdictions across the U.S.
Gerald Swanson. Gerald Swanson has been advising clients on state and local tax issues for over 30 years.
His primary practice areas are Washington state and local taxes and multistate taxes. Gerald represents clients in audit defense, appeals, settlement negotiations, drafting ruling requests, refund claims, corporate transactions and planning. He also advises clients in evaluating legislative and regulatory changes.
Gerald has represented companies of all sizes from family-owned businesses to Fortune 500 companies across a variety of industries, including financial services, retail/wholesale, manufacturing, and service. He also speaks and teaches on various state tax topics at continuing education programs and the University of Washington School of Law.
Gerald began his career at Ernst & Young in 1997. He joined PricewaterhouseCoopers in 2004 as a Manager, later advancing to Director. After 15 years in public accounting, he joined KOM Consulting in 2010. In 2024, Gerald formed Swanson Law Group.
Gerald holds a B.A. in Business from the University of Washington, a J.D. from Gonzaga University School of Law, and an LL.M. (Taxation) from the University of Washington School of Law. Gerald is licensed by the Washington State Bar Association.
